Good Children's Books teach the Young and Old alike!
Patience has always been one of those things I have avoided praying for. It is NOT as if I didn't need it - I was just weary to ask for it. People warned me, on more than one occasion, that instead of just granting you patience, God provides you difficult situations or an extended wait in answering a prayer, to help you actually develop the virtue. Instead of just waking up one morning with an ample dose of patience, many believe God gives you an opportunity to practice this virtue. Regardless of how we perceive the prayer answered, it is still an important one to pose - everyone needs patience. It is a good virtue to possess, and one that we should be willing to practice - often. Apparently, though never specifically requested, God has sent me many opportunities for growth in this area - at work, home and even at church. Each experience, has indeed strengthened my virtue of patience, and in the end, I am very grateful for God's kind, loving guidance - continually making me a slightly better me!
In Virginia Lieto's new book - Finding Patience, the reader discovers along with the main character, Faith (love that name - just happens to be the one God chose for my daughter), that sometimes patience really is that special something attained as we wait for the 'miracle' of whatever (or whomever) we are lacking patience with! She has a true gift for helping us discover the virtues in our everyday life. While I have enjoyed this fruit of her writing as an adult, it is so exciting to have it in a form we can now share with children. I am a HUGE proponent of reading with kids especially as a means of imparting lessons of faith! As a early childhood educator for over 15 years, and a big fan of learning the Catholic faith through a good book, I very much see Finding Patience as a perfect vehicle for the journey.
The story begins with Faith, along with her sisters, Hope and Charity, having just moved. Lieto skillfully uses waiting to make friends, getting settled in and even perhaps gaining a new puppy, to illustrate this hard to comprehend virtue for children. Hmmm, it is NOT very easy for adults to fully grasp too - another reason I love reading children's books, it is often just the language I need to bring a little clarity into my own faith journey! Additionally, I feel the dialog and the circumstances of her main character encounters also provide for great conversation starters between children and teachers, caregivers and/or parents.
Virginia Lieto's Finding Patience is a delightful, unique approach to teaching children about the virtues. I look forward to the rest of the adventures of Faith, Hope and Charity!!
