My Worry Remedy

This summer, my daughter discovered The Andy Griffith Show on Netflix. As I watched a few of the black and white episodes with her, it made me nostalgic for a more simple and peaceful time. As the show progressed into color I noticed the story lines began to reveal the reality of life. There has always been and this side of heaven, there will always be, something to threaten the peace Jesus came to leave us, even in the most idyllic settings.

That does not mean we should wave our anxiety flags in defeat. A faith in Christ comes with hope, as St. Peter declared, “a living hope.” When troublesome times arise, it is easy to become frightened and worried. Jesus counsels us as to the worthlessness of worry when he says, “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?”

Worry changes nothing, including the inevitable of a fixed life expectancy. Trust me on this one: I’ve tested it out one too many times! As if Jesus’ words were not clear enough for us to see the frivolousness of a life of fretting, Padre Pio advised, “Pray, hope, do not worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.”

As someone who struggles daily with anxiety, I find comfort and strength in the many beautiful traditions and devotions of the Catholic faith. When I worry, I tend to be paralyzed by my thoughts. My worries, fears, and concerns can spin round and round on the hamster wheel of my thoughts for hours and days! These are just 5 of the many devotions I have found to break anxiety’s spell on me. Not only do some of these devotions give me healthy and helpful actions, but they also renew my thoughts so I can once again focus on Christ and live in hope.

ROSARY

NOTHING brings PEACE to a world like the Rosary!! Why The Rosary ? Why Now? Gretchen Crowe OSV
History of the Rosary By Fr. R. Gribble
Praying the Rosary Dr. Ed Sri
Once considered the prayer of grandmothers, old-fashioned and even a chore to pray, the Rosary is finally getting the respect it deserves.  For a worrier, the familiar prayers offer encouragement and the feel of the beads through my fingers brings comfort. Often, I use my Rosary as a “Spiritual Abacus,” praying each bead for a special intention such as a sick friend, a hope for my child, or in thanksgiving for a blessing! As my wise friend Michael once told me, “Prayer isn’t the least you can do; it is the most you can do.”

SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Sacred Heart Prayer BOok Pauline Books and Media #Winner #welldone
Healing Promises Sacred Heart Anne Costa
This devotion won my heart with its 12 Promises. Nothing soothes a worrier’s heart like healing, protective, security-offering promises from God. Those Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus given to us through St. Margaret Mary Alacoque are:

  • (1) “I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
  • (2) I will establish peace in their homes.
  • (3) I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
  • (4) I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
  • (5) I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
  • (6) Sinners will find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
  • (7) Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.
  • (8) Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
  • (9) I will bless every place in which an image of my Heart is exposed and honored.
  • 10) I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
  • (11) Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in my Heart.
  • (12) I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. My divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”    Copyright (c) 1996 EWTN

DIVINE MERCY

7 Secrets of Divine Mercy Vinny Flynn (get the journal too!!)
Divine Mercy for MOms Ave Maria Press
Seven years ago, our family was blessed to welcome a little girl via adoption. We were so thrilled when we received her photograph in April and were informed we’d be able to travel and bring her home in 6 to 8 weeks. That quickly expanded to 6 months! The wait was agonizing, often triggering my negative-Nelly thoughts until I would be convinced something would prevent us from becoming her forever family. This is when I discovered the calming effects of the Divine Mercy Chaplet. The boys and I made it a habit to pray the Chaplet every day at 3 o’clock during our long wait and received many incredible insights and blessings. By the end of 2009, Faith become a permanent part of our family, as did this special trust-producing prayer.

ADORATION

21 WAys to Worship Eucharistic Adoration Vinny Flynn
Time in our quiet chapel with Jesus has done more for overcoming my anxiety than any other remedy I have attempted.  No matter how wound up I arrive, Jesus always has a way of straightening me out.  Whether I spend my time in quiet contemplative prayer, engaged in spiritual reading, or engrossed in Scripture; this time apart from the busy world always brings me peace.   Some of my Adoration visits have been wrought with tears, pleas, groans, and sighs; yet Jesus never leaves me in that knotted state. This ‘foretaste of Heaven’ as St. Teresa of Avila referred to Adoration as always gives me the hope I seek in the most troubling and unsettling of circumstances.

MIRACULOUS MEDAL

Miraculous Medal - contains Allison Gingras' miraculous story from her Adoption in China
The Miraculous Medal is what is known as a Sacramental.
“Holy Mother Church has, moreover, instituted sacramentals. These are sacred signs which bear a resemblance to the sacraments. They signify effects, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession of the Church. By them men are disposed to receive the chief effect of the sacraments, and various occasions in life are rendered holy.” ~ Catechism Catholic Church 1667

A Miraculous Medal has been around my neck since 2007 and has been touched upon the relic of many a Saint. My anxiety always subsides when I reach up and feel the raised imprint of Our Blessed Mother, the Queen of Saints, and remember she along with many other friends in heaven (my Saint Posse) are bringing my prayer intentions to Jesus.

Born To Soar: Unleashing God's Word in Your Life
By Melissa Overmyer (Servant Books)

My book thoughts tend to be uber selfish in nature. Usually my plan is to tell you more about how the book inspired my (and in turn hopefully your) spiritual journey then what the book was about. While a synopsis of the book should be apparent through my experiences, click here for the well-composed summary if you would like more information. This type of review is done very purposefully as I believe the true test of spiritual reading is how deeply it effects your spirituality.  If I can read a book and find myself underlining, highlighting and jotting notes all over the page then I know I have stumbled across a great work that warrants to be shared.  This was even more important to measuring the value of Born to Soar: Unleashing God's Word in Your Life as it is also a prayer journal.  This is actually my favorite format of book and it did not disappoint!
Born to Soar is a beautiful prayer and Scripture journal experience that combines video-based online teaching with written reflection inspired by the image of the monarch butterfly at every stage of development--egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, hatching, soaring and reproducing--in order to gently coach readers through an exploration of the truths of Scripture. Even for students learning about the Bible for the first time, artist, veteran Scripture teacher, and founder of Something Greater Ministries, Melissa Overmyer shows how they can realize their God-given potential in just six weeks.

WOW Moments

May was a difficult month as I awaited biopsy results, throughout all the anxiety and waiting the Spirit sent my beloved butterflies to ease my fears and instill peace.  One of the butterfly signs came in being asked to review Born to Soar.  Behind on many writing deadlines and still struggling through writing my own bible study book, my initial reaction to the request was a resounding, "No!"   Wisely, the marketing agent sent me a link to the book insisting this was one I did not want to miss. The MINUTE the butterflied cover appeared on my screen, I knew this was no ordinary review assignment!  Not only was God once again assuaging my fears with the reminder He is always with me, but also bringing me even closer to Him through this inspiring scripture and prayer journal!

Here are my "WOW" moments from Born to Soar: Unleashing God's Word in Your Life:
  • In 2007, after being delayed again to travel to China to bring my daughter, Faith home, the Spirit blessed me with a very special gift.  Outside Faith's bedroom window as I prayed through tears for a sign that His promise to bring this little girl into our family would be fulfilled, a beautiful butterfly appeared.  From that day until she was physically with us, I saw some form (word, picture, or actual) of a butterfly.  I never thought of the butterflies as talisman but simply reminders God had (and would never) abandon me. As I read Melissa's wonderful little butterfly tidbits as well as experiencing my own spiritual metamorphosis with Born to Soar, it made even more sense why the Spirit uses these beautiful creatures to speak to me.
  • "Reconciliation is a 'spiritual spa treatment' for Catholics. It exfoliates sin from the soul and slathers on grace."  It is one of the greatest opportunities for renewal God provides us.  The caterpillar could never become the butterfly if she is unwilling to slough off the chrysalis.  Jesus did not die for us to stay stuck in our sin, he came to give us life, and give it to us abundantly (John 10:10).
  • Though, as Melissa points out cocooning with God isn't necessarily a bad thing! At the end of Born to Soar she lists 7 ways to keep what you have found in the 6 weeks with her book and more importantly God's Word!.  Simple suggestions that the reader is sure to find easy to follow through with after emerging from their 'mini-retreat' truly transformed by the power of the Spirit felt in meditating on God's Word!

Little 'godcidence' moment

Melissa Overmyer shares so many uplifting and inspiring scripture verses in Born to Soar: Unleashing God's Word in Your Life.  You can not help but feel His presence grow with every days reading and reflection.  It is the intimate connection that develops as we learn how much God loves us and the care He took in our creation.  His Word, you will see if you spend even a small amount of time with it, begins to speak LOUDLY to you - even maybe when you are not even looking.  During the trials of May, there came a day when too weary from my worry to work, I decided to spend my lunch hour distracted by God's Word.  I 'randomly' opened my bible - clearly it was NOT random as the blue butterfly long forgotten added to the page was highlighting this verse in Colossians. Melting away my fears, as it encouraged me to be strong and joyful in the FULLNESS of my life, which is rooted and built, on Christ!

God is Not Fair and Other Reasons for Gratitude
By Daniel P Horan, OFM (Franciscan Media)

Unlike most book reviews - I selfishly seek to tell you more about how the book inspired my spirituality then what the book was about. While a synopsis of the book should be apparent through my experiences, I have enclosed a link to the well-composed marketing if you would like more information. This type of review is done very purposefully as I believe the true test of spiritual reading is how deeply it effects your spirituality.  If I can read a book and find myself underlining, highlighting and jotting notes all over the page then I know I have stumbled across a great work that warrants to be shared.

You will also quickly discover I only take the time to write reviews on books that fit that criteria. Although, I am blessed to receive many books that touch my heart and inspire my spiritual life; I can usually only find time to write about a few. God is Not Fair and Other Reasons for Gratitude found its way to the top of my reading pile at the perfect time!
Allison's Thoughts on Books: God is Not Fair (A book Review)

"WOW" Moments

The Month of May has been trying but also one of the most spiritually fruitful of my life.  After putting off a routine mammogram for nearly 5 years, I finally went.  The test revealed an enlarged lymph node - I am happy to report it was finally determined to be due to inflammation [You can listen to the MIRACULOUS story evolving that on this special episode of A Seeking Heart with Allison Gingras - it is NOT everyday one receives a favor from an Almost-Saint].

As the Lord, slowly walked me through this valley, Fr. Horan's words were equal parts comforting and inspiring. This was a time of acute awareness to pray always with urgency but without anxiety.  Here are some other "WOW" moments gleaned during that time from the pages of God is Not Fair:
  • We are not better than anyone else.  Regardless of what blessings God has allowed in your life, what talents you posses, or how you use them.  Additionally, those gifts that God bestows only bless you to the degree to which you use them; and more importantly recognize from Whom they have come.  Praise and Thanksgiving are powerful prayers.
  • "If you want to succeed, you need to learn to fail well." How many ideas has this ADHD brain concocted? Far more than have either been realized, or more importantly, been implemented with any real success.  The more I contemplated Fr. Horan's words, the more I realize that my measure of whether an idea or activity was fruitful is not the same as God's.  Happily, it is only HIS gauge that matters!
  • Catholics do not pay enough attention to the Word of God.  As a Catholic who did not include Scripture as a part of her life until she was in her mid-30s, I whole-heartedly concur with this statement (which I have paraphrased).  We seek to hear God speak in our lives but overlook the one place His voice is clearest - His Word!  The Holy Spirit moves all around us.  As Fr. Horan reminds us the Bible is still relevant today, and when open our minds and hearts to the Spirit's moving there, we'll never be disappointed.

But Jesus intervenes to remind his followers that being a Christian is not about belonging to an organization or being a card-carrying member of anything.  Being a Christian is about what we do and how we live.
~  Daniel P. Horan, OFM,
God is Not Fair and Other Reasons for Gratitude

Our Daily Bread

Bread, has taken on an entirely different connotation to me over the last 2 years, as I struggle to come to terms with my body's inability to tolerate gluten.  For years, I have fought through horrendous stomach issues blaming my Irritable Bowel Syndrome and family genes.  However, after a very serious health scare (do you recognize a pattern in my life), I realized this "sweet-bread loving Portuguese" girl had to make significant changes to her diet. I'm not going to lie, this is still an ongoing battle, as food is addicting and saying good-bye to some of my favorites has been extremely difficult.  My daily bread, the nourishment of my body, that was once mindless has become some days all encompassing.

This daily bread seeking can lead to an unintentional self-absorption.  This inward turning behavior can actually happen whenever we are on a quest for something to satisfy our hunger especially when we leave God and others out of the search.  Our bread should be as it was for Jesus' - to do the Will of the Father. When we seek to satisfy our hearts by obeying the
Will of the One who created us, we find not only what is good for us but also see how to do good for those to whom we are blessed to share this World.  It is amazing what we can learn to live without when we are feasting on the beautiful banquet laid before us.  We discover new ways to be nourished.  More importantly, this seeking inevitably brings our eyes outward where there are so many other joys to be discovered.
When we seek to satisfy our hearts by obeying the Will of the One who created us, we find not only what is good for us but also see how to do good for those to whom we are blessed to share this World

Our Call to Sainthood

"Sainthood is a complicated and at times, controversial subject," author Daniel P. Horan, OFM, reminds us in God is Not Fair, "saints are sinners too."   It is not about our perfection but our fidelity.  Our faithfulness to continue to seek God in all things.  The ordinary of our every day presents opportunity after opportunity to encounter Christ; sainthood is when we persevere in that quest regardless of how many times we fail at it.

Conversion is a daily process.  God provides more than enough love, mercy and grace for us to succeed at sainthood; as long as we remember without these gifts from Him, it can not be attained.   The greatest gift we can give ourselves is cultivating a sense of awe at the presence of God all around us.  I call those "godcidence", Fr. Horan referred to them as "vestige" or "footprints".   The are the invisible God made visible, which makes perfect sense to me though I cannot explain how or why I see these things. The mystery of God, the inability to explain all that He is, precisely makes faith the beautiful gift that it is.  God is not fair, and I for one am so grateful for that!
