Join me for the next 8 days as I use the wonderful new book by Lisa Hendey, Catholicmom.com founder, to ponder The Grace of Yes!
Lisa Hendey has created an incredibly readable introspection into the the many yeses in life that make up our journey to a life of faith. The reader will most definitely find connections with Lisa's heartfelt sharing, which may affirm their own Grace of Yes. As well as be challenged and moved by the many fascinating and fresh perspectives found in the resounding YES of others!
Chapter 1. The Grace of Belief ...
What makes up our story of belief? Our upbringing, those good ole college days, and for some of us marriage and rearing children. Each moment has (or can have) an impact on our grace of yes to God ... in Lisa's story I connected on so many levels, even though we grew up on opposite coasts and have very little in common with the events that brought us to where we are. When we look at the journey to faith , it always amazes me how similar the minds of the faithful are -- the questions, the doubts, the triumphs often overlap.
During our early marriage, I tried out many pews, church-shopping, my way around Southern California and looking for a pastor who was entertaining in a church tat was pretty and had good music. I see now that my search was for the wrong things. I was a consumer, not a giver or a true member of the Body of Christ.
Today's Question to Ponder*
(*taken directly from The Grace of Yes, as each chapter ends with several great questions to ponder):
What aspects of your faith life need to be renewed with greater vigor?
There are three aspects of faith life that I try to keep strong because I know they are instrumental in how close I feel to God and the Kingdom of Heaven. First, prayer - I am a big fan of devotions, I am not however one who is able to stick to the same devotion for long. I go with the season or the wind - right now I am on the Sacred Heart of Jesus Novena and First Friday devotion, Our Lady Undoer of Knots novena and prayer, and for November constant prayers to the Holy Souls. In addition, I am always working to keep my internal voice in communication with God and away from talking to myself!! Second, scripture is at the heart of my learning to recognize and KEEP hearing God's voice in my life! I could definitely use more time in the scriptures - at least I have my Words with Jesus app to remind me daily to look at the Gospels! Third, the Sacraments! The one I need to work on is attending DAILY Mass. I have never good at that, though I desire it and KNOW how much better my relationship with God would be if I spent every morning receiving JESUS - body, blood, soul and divinity - within me, as well as have the scriptures opened for me. Those are the things I try to put my energy into, and when I take account of my current faith life the first place I make changes!
