An Invitation to Spend Time with Jesus

Learning Something New
My road to sitting with Jesus in Adoration began nearly 10 years ago.  Quite, some might say serendipitously but after spending many hours in His presence, I would say this has the Holy Spirit’s finger prints all over it!!

My husband and I, along with our children, had just made the transition to this new Church.  It was actually where we met and were eventually married,  but we’d not worshiped there since our wedding nearly 20 years earlier.  We had moved out of town, and spent many years at my childhood Church until circumstances changed and it became clear we had to find a new place to call our Spiritual Home.

I was going through a very difficult time spiritually, emotionally and mentally – and in hopes of accelerating the healing, I began attending Mass more often.  Rooting myself in these encounters with Christ brought comfort to my heart, and strength to my soul.

A Chance Encounter

One morning, as I was leaving daily Mass, an old friend’s mom was sitting on the little stone wall right outside the lower church’s doorway.  Although deep in a conversation with a friend when I came out of the chapel, she paused to greet me with this genuine care and warmth that I rarely encountered anywhere else in my life.  After initial niceties, and we catching up on her daughters, she asked me if I had signed up for weekly adoration yet.  I felt a little embarrassed asI didn’t know much about Eucharist Adoration, and definitely had no desire to spend an entire hour sitting by myself in the musty chapel.

What happened next, though I would not realize for many years, was about to change my life forever. This chance encounter with the very woman who sparked my faith when I was  a teenager was about to set it ablaze!  Mrs. P explained that she was responsible for assuring Jesus was never left unattended during the Saturday day long adoration time.  She was pretty sure there were still a few time slots to fill, and asked if I would please go see if there were any that I could help with.

Saturday? Are you kidding, I have 2 small kids, with soccer and baseball, plus housework, etc.  No way could I give up any time on Saturday, but that look in her eye said I wasn’t getting out without at least pretending to check over the schedule.

Adoration Chapel

Then I Said Yes
Back into the Chapel I went, waited the appropriate amount of time that would assure me she’d left and came back out to leave.  There she was. So, she asked, did you find a time?  OH $*%, I thought to myself how am I going to get out of this.  No Mam, I responded, she gently encouraged, go look again I AM sure there is an hour you can give to Jesus (oh man that sounded familiar!! Think Jesus, 3 sleepy Apostles and the Garden!)

Obediently, I marched back in – the only available slot – 2:30 to 3:30 pm on Saturday.  Really God?  Surely, Mrs. P has left by now … and without signing my name I headed back out of the church. OH Yeah, you guessed it she was still there!

I have no doubt she was a messenger of the Holy Spirit that day and neither was taking no for an answer! I went back, signed up for 2:30 – at the time thinking I’d go a few weeks then erase my name.  While, I could not have been more wrong.  I kept that hour, diligently for 3 years!  Then the Lord called us to another church that had Adoration every day – and 10 years later, I have had the incredible blessing of keeping at least one hour a week with the Lord!!
